Are Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions still important?

The adding of meta titles and descriptions is always a contentious topic, with some SEO experts believing they are no longer valuable, whilst others having good evidence to show that sites with them do rank better.

What are meta titles and descriptions?

A meta tag defines the title of your web page. It should be less than 70 characters and have important keywords. Search engines will reference those keywords within search terms and help your website appear. Be careful though and avoid keyword spamming. Also, Google recommends using your brand name in the title also, and making sure that everyone is unique.

A meta description, whilst not always looked at by many people, can still be picked up by google as a snippet of what is on the page and can help ranking. It should too have keywords included which will show up in search snippets. Again, this should be unique on every page, ideally and make it engage to make the user want to click on it. Remember, it is a competitive market on google so you want your description to stand out from the crowd and entice the reader to click your page.

How they work

The title tag and the meta description tags should include keywords relevant to the content of the web page they describe. This then helps Search Engines understand what the page is about and better index your web pages accordingly for relevant keywords or keyword phrases. As a result, you should see an improvement in your SERP within a few weeks. Remember that you should always look to improve this like you would content on the site to ensure your descriptions and titles are still relevant with the direction of your business.
