Northern Media are this month celebrating delivering a marketing project to their hundredth customer, an achievement which we are extremely proud of. But it hasn’t always been a bed of roses…
Having set the business up in a 6ft by 6ft office behind Horbury Library, that could have been misinterpreted as a caretaker cupboard rather than an agency head office, directors Jonathan Scott and Chris Elliott remember those humble beginnings back in 2009.
“I remember vividly our first day, because having left a well-paid job at Yell I thought, ‘What the hell have I done’ (the language was clearly worse than that, but a good PR agency never swears publicly). Chris and I both invested a modest £2K, which was all we had, and recognised that with a family to support and mortgages to pay, we had about six weeks to make it stick or the business would crash and burn. It’s amazing how the fear of failure drives a man.
"Fortunately I had built some great relationships with some key people and local businesses during my six years at Yell and managed to persuade some of those clients to use our services. I must at this point give a huge thank you to some of those people who put their faith in our ability in the first few weeks, despite a clear lack of experience: Luke Pierce (ABi Garage Doors), Darren Backhouse (MJ Backhouse), Duane Swift (Excel Roller Shutters), Darren Rickett (DPR Ltd), Tracey Phillips (Easaway), Phil Denton (Dencroft Garages), Shaun Boswell (Alternative) and Ian Vurgest (ASD). Without them Northern Media might never have existed.”
Despite only recruiting their first employee in 2013, three years later Northern Media now employ ten members of staff and have continued to grow year on year, despite trading through a pretty tough recession. With a growth strategy in place, Northern Media are expecting to double in size over the next four years.
Commenting on the achievement, managing director Chris Elliott added, “When we set up Northern Media seven years ago, our aim was quite simple: to deliver a wide range of creative and strategic marketing services to business across the North of England and achieve a solid return on our clients investments.
"Looking at our client base now, I think we can say with confidence that we have certainly achieved that objective. Of the twelve major clients we acquired in our first year of trading, only one is no longer trading with us, but the other eleven have continued to grow, which is a huge testament to the consistency and quality of our services seven years down the line.”
