A company’s website is an extremely powerful tool when it comes to increasing product and service sales. It is therefore important that the content, navigation and usability of the site are all geared towards the user to ensure that they stay on the page long enough to decide whether to contact, enquire or make a purchase.
At Northern Media we carry out website audits for our clients to help them identify areas for improvement. Here are some of the common mistakes we find and help businesses to address:
- Poor content organisation
It is not only the quality of content which matters but the structure of the pages is also crucial. Potential customers need to be able to find information quickly for them to act on that info. An easy to use page layout with helpful internal links will enhance the experience and help the site perform more effectively.
- No clear call to action
No matter what kind of service or product you are promoting, a clear call to action is essential. Make sure there are clear instructions for what the user should do next. This could be to proceed to the online checkout, join a mailing list, visit you in store or pick up the phone to make an appointment. Make it easy for them to do so by including an internal link or the relevant information such as telephone number or a Google map with the business location marked on it.
- Too much jargon
Another common mistake is that text often includes industry jargon which potential customers might not understand. Technical language, abbreviations or uncommon acronyms should be avoided to make the site as user friendly and understandable as possible.
