Rebrand for Acorn Scaffolding
Established over 30 years ago just outside Malton, near York, Acorn Scaffolding provide a range of scaffolding solutions to major construction projects throughout Leeds, York, Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield. Five years ago, they set up a subsidiary called Acorn Event Solutions, providing concert stands, spectator seating, platforms, marquee bases, hoists and bridges to major events throughout the UK. Throughout that period, they retained the same brand logo, which was starting to look dated. With two unique divisions within company, targeting a completely different market audience, the challenge was to come up with a new corporate logo and branding that would reflect both areas of the business.
Whilst the two target markets were very different, including the personalities of the decision makers, there were two unique elements that were common to both divisions, the first part of the company name ‘Acorn’ and the tube & link equipment that was used in delivering the scaffolding and the event platforms. Northern Media therefore created some ideas playing on the common features to create a simple, abstract symbol and logo that would reflect both sides of the business. Northern Media also designed the stationary, produced the graphic designs for the trucks and vans, designed the scaffolding banners and also designed and produced the pop up stands for Acorn Events exhibition events. Also in the pipeline are two websites for each respective side of the business.

However, after launching Acorn Event Solutions over five years ago, we just felt that the old Acorn Scaffolding logo did not appeal to our more eccentric audience within the events sector. Our objective was therefore to create a brand that reflected both sides of the business, retained the emphasis of the Acorn name, was modern, simple and had a link mechanism to the solutions we offer – not an easy task! Northern Media delivered on all four levels and we are really pleased with the outcome. Particularly with the events side of the business, we now have real confidence that the new corporate image will appeal to their ‘creative senses’. What we were impressed with most is Northern Media’s ability to think outside the box. Their graphic design team did a great job of coming up with a range of branding ideas, then listened to our feedback and came back with a new range of adapted versions. Recognising that I had a few people to convince about the new corporate image, they also showed how the logo might appear in different marketing and advertising applications, such as stationary, van designs, brochure design and printed advertising.
