Economic History of Bradford
Bradford rose to significance during the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture. The cities growth was largely down to the boom of the Industrial Revolution, and amongst the earliest industrialised settlements, rapidly becoming the "wool capital of the world". The area’s access to a supply of coal, iron ore and soft water facilitated the growth of Bradford’s manufacturing base, which, as textile manufacture grew, led to a rapid increase in population, due to the increase in work opportunity.
The textile sector in Bradford fell into a terminal decline from the mid-20th century. Since this time, whilst Bradford has suffered from its industrial decline, it has seen many other diverse economies grow and develop, with several major organisations choosing Bradford as their head office base. These most notably include Morrisons (Supermarket), Yorkshire Building Society & Friends Provident (Finance), NG Bailey (Engineering) and Pace Micro (Electronics). This recent growth in commerce has largely resulted from the opportunities within the labour marketplace coupled with great transport links via road (M606 / M62) and air (Leeds Bradford Airport).
