Economic History of Harrogate
Best known as a Spa Town, Harrogate originally grew in popularity during the Georgian Era, when it was labelled ‘The English Spa’ due to the health properties of its water. The resulting influx of wealthy visitors contributed significantly to the wealth and economic growth of the town. Today Harrogate continues to be a popular destinations for tourists, both within the town and as a centre for those looking to venture further North into the Yorkshire Dales.
The conference and exhibition industry is the focus of the town’s commerce and business, with Harrogate International Centre being the third largest fully integrated conference and exhibition
centre in the UK, and one of the largest in Europe. Recent reports show that the centre generates over £150 million to the local economy every year and attracts in excess of 350,000 business visitors annually. The town is also home to the Great Yorkshire Showground and Pavilions of Harrogate, both of which are major conference destinations. The Great Yorkshire Showground is the hub of the regional agricultural industry, hosted by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. The Great Yorkshire Show takes place here annually. The many business visitors to Harrogate sustain a number of large hotels, originally built for visitors to the Spa.
The continue popularity of Harrogate as an exhibition destination has given rise to the media industry, with many marketing agencies providing specialist website design and professional exhibition services to companies throughout the area.
Today, Harrogate is a very different place than it was when Northern Media began, with the service sector now dominating what was traditionally a manufacturing economy. Harrogate now boasts one of the largest financial centres in the United Kingdom outside London, and whilst recent times have seen the economy wobble slightly, it still remains one of Britain’s Best Cities for Business (Omis Research). Over the last fifteen years, new tertiary industries such as retail, call centres, telecoms, offices and media have contributed to substantial economic growth.
